Amanda Bossard graduated from high school in 1992 and began her studies in marine science at Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage. Bossard started her commercial fishing career in 1999, after she began working on the ship F/V Sunset. This 65' schooner converted to an ice-fish tender was operated by Murat Aritan. The fisherman has been in commercial fisherman since 1993. Bossard has married Aritan. They have now joined forces and are claiming their respective industries. Both of them are in favor of conserving resources and maximising profits. Otolith was founded in Philadelphia by Bella Bossard who is now mother to two kids with ages of 3 and 1 Bossard. The name Otolith is a fond reference to Bossard's extensive experience with fish biology as well as her husband's many connections in the seafood business. They are often separated for 5 months at a stretch while they pursue financial and environmental goals that reflect their commitment and autonomy wherever they are. Since July of 2016, Bossard as well as her daughters Isabella age 12 and son Andre age 10 return to Southeast Alaska annually each summer for deckhand work throughout the summer wild salmon harvest. With a small 42 troller, the Bossards are able to catch salmon by hooks. They work in conjunction with Aritan working in the local processing facility for a period of two weeks.
